Should you be changing your bedding in order to make sure your birds stay warm during cold weather?
The answer to that is pretty simple. Bedding should stay the same no matter the season.
Don’t use anything that might absorb too much water or will not dry well. Pine shavings, straw, or hay are your best options and those are what you’re going to find recommended most often.
Pinewood shavings are definitely my most-recommended type of bedding to use. Shavings absorb a lot of moisture and manure, so it works out very well for your chickens during all seasons.
When chickens breathe, they produce a large volume of water vapor from their breath…moreso than humans because they have air sacs instead of lungs. One of the nice things about pine shavings is that they will absorb a lot of that water.
Pinewood shavings are also easy to clean up. It’s not too hard to get in there with a shovel and clean it out.
You will probably find that you do have to clean out your chicken house a little more often in the winter time because the environment is more moist. But it’s extremely important to make sure you use a dry bedding in the winter time.
